Prevention is the best medicine, which is why the Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation continues to focus on it. A few years ago, to promote safe sleep, we started giving every baby born at Bartlett a baby box containing baby-centric items and doubling as the perfect-sized bed for a newborn. It’s an idea that began in Finland more than 75 years ago; one that has, according to some, helped that country achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. In 2018, we’ve turned our prevention attention to diabetes by providing support for Health Matters , a Bartlett program for those with prediabetes or those at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The yearlong course focuses on food, exercise and other lifestyle changes that could reverse prediabetes. The Foundation provided scholarships for the first session, which began in January. Another series of Health Matters will be offered beginning in August, for which the Foundation will offer scholarship support. Preparedness goes hand-in-hand with prevention. Bartlett is a focal point for services for the community in the event of a disaster. One of the first things the Foundation did this year was to fund a three-day supply of emergency food, water and storage containers. The MRE-style (meal ready-to-eat) kits, which have a 10-year shelf life and do not require heating or preparation, are intended to provide 100 percent of staff and patients’ estimated nutrition and hydration needs.
