It was a great summer, and now fall is here—time to take a quick look back at the summer and at what lies ahead. In early summer the Foundation’s scholarship committee reviewed 33 applications for our Edelman scholarships—21 from college-level students, 12 from high schools. The nine students selected, who collectively received $38,500 in support of their postsecondary and graduate school education, are now starting their fall term of health sciences studies. Since the scholarship program began in 2009, more than ten Edelman scholars have returned to their Southeast Alaska communities to practice their chosen health sciences careers. By supporting these students, the Foundation works to enhance access to high-quality health care in our region. A safe space Looking ahead, we are thrilled to partner with Bradley Grigg, Bartlett Regional Hospital’s Chief Behavioral Officer, in identifying needs for the new youth stabilization room, a safe space dedicated to youth dealing with mental health crises. Currently, those who come to Bartlett experiencing a mental health crisis, youth or adult, are usually sent out of town for care. We plan to develop a stabilization facility with the ability to care for up to four adults and four children at once.
