Today as I write our summer column, I once again pause to give thanks—this time to our community and all it has done as together we faced COVID-19 during the spring. I am very proud of our community hospital, which not only expanded capacity to care for COVID-19 patients, but with its top-notch professional and medical staff—in fact all of the staff— continued to adapt to accommodate those throughout the region in need of medical care. They were not alone in facing the challenges—the capital city’s first responders and City and Borough of Juneau’s Emergency Operations Command were an integral part of the mix, as were volunteers who made personal protective equipment, donated food, shopped and delivered for those unable to shop for themselves, and our grocery stores, too—and the list goes on and on. Here at the Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation, with support from our community partners, we pitched in to help increase access to behavioral health resources for families in crisis. During March and April, demand for behavioral health resources surged. Therapists met with patients via virtual services like FaceTime, Skype and Zoom to ensure Bartlett Foundation Executive Director María Uchytil presents a check to Bartlett Regional Hospital CEO Chuck Bill for COVID-19-related behavioral health services. Embracing community while social distancing patients were cared for at a time when social distancing was introduced to maintain health and safety. We also provided funding to the Emergency Department for COVID-19 support services. This summer season will be a somber one for our community. Like everyone else, our summer events have been impacted and may be canceled. Stay tuned to www.brhfoundation.org for updates. We’re living in a new world—one that brought about social distancing, hunkering down, face masks and Zoom gatherings. But we’re also living in Juneau, a place that defines “community.” On behalf of the Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation: Thank you, Juneau—we are strong together! María E. Uchytil Executive Director Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation
