Bartlett Regional | House Calls | Summer 2019
6 House Calls Summer 2019 Working together— and reaching out Bartlett Regional Hospital employees and students from the University of Alaska nursing program took over 18,000 classes through the Education Services Department over the past year—that’s about 30 courses per employee, including live training events as well as online learning modules. Thirty-five instructors from several health care entities taught classes, some grant-funded and some in partnership with Capital City Fire and Rescue. Even more teamwork, both within Bartlett and with the community, is Bartlett Education Director Gail Moorehead’s top priority. “Health care doesn’t start when you come into the hospital,” she says. “Health care is a partnership with everyone in the community.” “Health care is a partnership with everyone in the community.” 2 Push hard and fast in the center of the person’s chest. Use the beat of the disco classic “Stayin’ Alive” to guide your compressions. No mouth-to-mouth breathing is required. 1 Call 911 if you see a teen or adult collapse and they’re not responsive when you ask them if they’re OK. Hands-only CPR You don’t have to do mouth-to-mouth If you are not a health care provider, you still can save the life of someone in cardiac arrest, and you don’t need to know mouth-to- mouth resuscitation. You can use hands-only CPR on teens and adults. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the vast majority of cardiac arrests that occur outside of the hospital take place at home. Most people who haven’t learned CPR feel helpless to act in that situation. Yet when a person has a cardiac arrest, their survival depends on how quickly someone performs CPR. That’s where hands-only CPR comes in. It has been shown to be as effective as full CPR during the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest. If you are interested in getting a kit to learn CPR for adults or infants at home with your family, please come by the Administration Building at the hospital campus and pick one up. Hands-only CPR consists of just two steps: ALWAYS PREPARED
