Bartlett Regional | House Calls | Fall 2020
The art of resiliency Resiliency means staying power, or as Merriam-Webster notes, it’s “an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.” As the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc in our lives, I’m using this time to reflect on the journey of the Foundation. For over 25 years, the Bartlett Foundation has provided resources to our hospital for unfunded needs. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in our first quarter century. It’s an impressive list that includes our groundbreaking for the Bartlett House in 1995, which today offers convenient, low-cost lodging for families of out-of-town patients. Reflecting our work Also in 1995, the Mental Health Unit and Bartlett Outpatient Psychiatric Services began operating; we are fortunate to still have them, especially during these challenging times. We are proud to have provided support to MHU and BOPS over the years. Funding education is another key component of our resiliency. Through our journey we helped fund training for Bartlett nurses through such programs as Sexual Assault Nurse Evaluator (SANE) training and an obstetrics training and a certification seminar for OB nurses. We continue to support Bartlett with community education programs such as “Health Matters” for those diagnosed with prediabetes. Our baby boxes and infant safe sleep materials are distributed in Juneau and Southeast Alaska communities through a partnership with the Southeast Area Health Education Center, through Tlingit & Haida’s Little Eagles and Ravens Nest Child Care Center, and directly from Foundation staff. Please call if you need one! Looking ahead When I think about staying power, I think of endowments, the gift that keeps giving in perpetuity. We are fortunate that Grace and Philip Edelman endowed the Foundation with resources to establish a health sciences scholarship program. For years their gift has benefited numerous Southeast Alaska students pursuing professions in health care. Looking ahead, in support of The Joint Commission pain management standards, we are helping with resources for a program to help hospitalized patients identify and use non-pharmacological ways to treat discomfort. No matter how we look back on these challenging times, the Foundation is grateful for our resiliency; for what has been accomplished, the staying power of so much of it, and the knowledge these efforts and more will continue into the future. Thank you for being the BEST part of our community! María E.
