3-D mammography When Bartlett began offering 3-D mammography three years ago, it was a new option not covered by all health insurance companies. Things have changed since then. Insurance companies recognize the benefit. Now, 3-D mammography is becoming the standard. How it works The 3-D unit takes 15 separate image slices used to create the 3-D image, known as tomography or tomosynthesis. Studies have shown it to detect 41% more invasive breast cancers, with a 40% reduction in false positives. The bottom line Bartlett Radiologist Steve Strickler, DO, has said he’s detected irregularities that might not be seen using 2-D technology. “The detail is incomparable,” says Bartlett Diagnostic Imaging Director Israel Ginn. #PeopleofBRH Meet Chelsea Gagnon The newest member of the Bartlett Regional Hospital Mammography staff is homegrown. Mammographer Chelsea Gagnon grew up in Gustavus and now lives in Juneau. Chelsea is grateful for the efficient front office staff in the Diagnostic Imaging department and to be engaged with the Southeast community. She is committed to patient education, showing patients their images and sharing breast health information. “Be aware of your body,” she advises. “Do regular breast self-exams. If you find anything unusual, don’t be scared. See your health care provider.” Studies have shown 3-D mammography to detect 41%MORE invasive breast cancers, with a 40% REDUCTION in false positives.
